Penny Process & Guidelines

Overview of Our Penny Handling

The U.S. Mint has ended production of the penny for general circulation after more than 230 years, meaning no new pennies are being produced for everyday use, although existing pennies remain legal tender. As a result, the availability of pennies has become more limited and unpredictable.

Due to these changes, we have updated how certain cash transactions are handled. When exact change is not available, some cash transactions may be rounded in accordance with standard rounding practices. In addition, penny orders may be limited or unavailable depending on supply, particularly for business customers. These updates help ensure transactions can be completed efficiently and consistently while we responsibly manage available coin inventory. Please review the FAQs below for more details on how these changes may apply.
